My daughter is 9, she is biracial, her dad is half Haitian, half Dominican, I am white bread Heinz 57. I just bought her a satin wrapping scarf to help her maintain her style however, I have no clue how to wrap it. If I still lived in Florida I would ask a friend, but live in Wyoming, there not a-lot of people around here with that knowledge.
Hi Sherri. I emailed you a bit earlier about my 2 yr olds hair, but I am sure you will not remember. She is nearly 3 now. She is biracial and although the crown of her hair is thicker and kinkier, there are still some finer areas as well. From what I have learned so far, it is best to avoid mineral oil, petroleum, and alcohol… just use the natural stuff. However, beeswax was suggested to me (by someone who probably knows nothing) to slide down thin bits of hair to create soft ringlets. While I would guess that would look and feel nice, I am worried about the health of the hair. What have you learned about the specific ingredients I have mentioned? It is hard to find products that do not contain that stuff.
Hmmm, Joy. Those are some good questions. I will be honest, some of the products I use have some of those ingredients but I try to keep them to a minimum. I try to strike a balance between “natural” and “afordable and effective”.
Someone recently turned me on to Miss Jessies products which are quite frankly, VERY expensive. But…they are quite wonderful and their popularity is spreading among my friends like wildfire.
Two products I love from Miss Jessie’s”
1. Baby Buttercream
2. Rapid Recovery Treatment
I plan on exploring the world of natural products soon. I have some good leads and look forward to trying them out, passing them on to my test group and offer up some reviews.
Keep your eyes out for them!

Hello. Are there any instructional braiding/locks dvds and books that you enjoy that you can point me to? I appreciate Sisterlocks very much. Also, are you on twitter? I’m @Black_Dove. Please check out my blog and grace it with a comment. I’m a newbie to blogging, relatively speaking. Dr. Cornwell your hair is DIVA-licious~
I have a question, not so much a comment. my daughter who is 11 years old has sister locks. Last week we found out she has lice and we were told that she would have to be shaved bald. Both her father and I want some of her hair left behind so we have been mannually removing her locks.
Needless to say it’s been 5 days and we have gotten 1/3 of her hair
I understand there maybe a product for lock removal and as my time is running short to treat the lice, my family is in limbo . We have to treat the lice before both my kids can go back to daycare as they have to be nit free. to treat one child is not enough both my girls share the same bedroom.
Please let me know if you have this product or if you can assist with the lock removal or if there are other options.
I am so, so sorry. A couple of things-
First I did a story on sister locks. I am not a professional. That being said, here is what I do know.
My daughter has locks, but not sister locks. About three months into them, I was pretty unhappy with how big some of then were and decided to take them out and redo them. I only did a few and here is what I learned-
1. It really damages the hair. Even now, I can see the difference in the ones I removed.
2. A few months ago, there was a lice scare at my daughter’s school. I did some research on lice and locks at the time. I did read that if they get in locs you often have to cut the hair off, but not shave bald. It is hard for me to understand why you have to shave your baby bald. In most locks, there is about an inch or so of hair at the scalp that hasn’t locked yet. Also, as I’m sure you are discovering, the locked hair closest to the scalp unlocks easier because it has not been locked as long. One option might be to try to leave just long enough hair to put some extensions.
2. Lice hate both tea tree oil and peppermint. Dr. Bonner’s pure Castile soap comes in both.
3. I did find a product on line but can not tell you how well it works because I simply soaked the locks individually in hot water and worked with detangler and the pointy end of a rat tail comb.
The product is Knotty Boy Dred Removal Kit and here’s the link-

Good luck!
